Rabbi's Message
Message from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

Korach, staged a rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. With jealousy and spite, he argued that it wasn’t fair that Moses and Aaron should be the leaders, that the role
should be shared with others.

With the passion of the self-righteous, Korach and his followers challenged Aaron in his role as high priest and even began to prepare the Ketoret, the holy incense used in the Tabernacle. Miraculously the earth opened and swallowed Korach and his followers.

It would seem like that would have put a decisive end to the rebellion, but there were still Jews who kept arguing the point, refusing to accept G-d’s will. G-d sent a plague, which ran rampant throughout the desert encampment, leaving thousands dead in its wake.

Immediately Aaron took the pan of holy incense and walked into the encampment. Whoever he passed was immediately healed.

Rashi, a famous Torah commentator, said that Aaron encountered the angel of death. The angel told Aaron that he was sent by G-d to kill these people. Aaron told the angel that
Moses sent him to save them. Doesn’t G-d trump Moses, argued the angel of death. Aaron responded that Moses was a messenger of G-d’s will. With that, the angel was appeased and left the Jews alone.

We may ask, if it was G-d’s command and will that the angel of death was following, should that not have been enough for Aaron to allow him to continue his path of annihilation? The answer is no, G-d may have set things up in a particular way, but our purpose as a nation is to overcome our challenges and thus, to fulfill G-d’s will.

This week we commemorate the day of passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Rebbe, like Moses, and our holy leaders throughout history, has played an essential role in our generation achieving our spiritual purpose. The Rebbe’s message to our generation rings loudly in these challenging times; it only takes one good deed to tip the scale and to shift the balance of the world towards the ultimate good, the coming of the final redemption. Let us honor the Rebbe by doing another good deed, and thus bring more light and goodness
into the world.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zushe Cunin

Parshah in a Nutshell

Parshat Korach

The name of the Parshah, "Korach," refers to Korach, head of the rebellion against Moses and Aaron, and is found in Numbers 16:1.

Korach incites a mutiny challenging Moses leadership and the granting of the kehunah (priesthood) to Aaron. He is accompanied by Moses’ inveterate foes, Dathan and Abiram. Joining them are 250 distinguished members of the community, who offer the sacrosanct ketoret (incense) to prove their worthiness for the priesthood. The earth opens up and swallows the mutineers, and a fire consumes the ketoret-offerers.

A subsequent plague is stopped by Aaron’s offering of ketoret. Aaron’s staff miraculously blossoms and brings forth almonds, to prove that his designation as high priest is divinely ordained.

G‑d commands that a terumah (“uplifting”) from each crop of grain, wine and oil, as well as all firstborn sheep and cattle, and other specified gifts, be given to the kohanim (priests).
