Rabbi's Message
Message from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

There is a symbiotic relationship between G-d and the Jewish people. G-d created a system where the Jewish people oversee events below, and G-d responds by blessing them from above. This is made clear through the concept of prayer. Jews pray to G-d, and G-d responds to them.

Why did G-d need to create such a system? Couldn’t He just bless the Jewish people with whatever they need? Doesn’t he know what they need even better than they do themselves?

The answer is made clear in this week’s Torah portion and brings up a vivid reflection of the times we are living in right now.

G-d commands Moses to form silver trumpets. These trumpets were a way of signaling to the people. When the entire nation was being called to convene, two trumpets were blown at the same time. When the leaders of the nation were being called, only one trumpet was blown. A series of short blasts signaled those encamped in the east to travel, while a second series of short blasts signaled those encamped in the south to travel, etc.

In Israel there are loud sirens blaring daily. These sirens are blasted over speakers throughout communities, signaling to those living there to get into a bomb shelter and wait until it is safe to exit. Those living through this are very sensitive to sounds, even a song or the background music on a video can trigger them.

The Torah portion continues, and the Jewish people are told that when there is an adversary threatening them, they should go to war. The trumpets are blasted to signal them to gather and prepare to fight. The verse concludes saying, “you shall blow your trumpets and be remembered before the L-rd your G-d, and thus be saved from your enemies.”

The blast of the trumpet signaled that they should go to war and fight, for that is the responsibility that they have towards their people, that is them fulfilling their side of the bargin with G-d. And G-d promises that when they fight, in a moral and G-dly way, against the enemies who are threatening them, they will prevail.

Let us all pray that the next blare of a siren will be replaced with the blast of the trumpet of victory. Let our brave soldiers in the IDF receive G-d’s protection and come home safe and triumphant to their families.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zushe Cunin

Parshah
Parshah in a Nutshell

Parshat Behaalotecha

The name of the Parshah, "Behaalotecha," means "When you raise" and it is found in Numbers 8:2.

Aaron is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary.

A Second Passover is instituted in response to the petition “ Why should we be deprived?” by a group of Jews who were unable to bring the Passover offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G‑d instructs Moses on the procedures for Israel’s journeys and encampments in the desert, and the people journey in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year.

The people are dissatisfied with their “bread from heaven” ( the manna), and demand that Moses supply them with meat. Moses appoints 70 elders, to whom he imparts of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses, and is punished with leprosy; Moses prays for her healing, and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery.

Though the vine be supported by straight reeds and forked reeds, it cannot stand up under the weight of the wine in its grapes. So if wine's own mother cannot bear its burden, how then can you?
