Rabbi's Message
Message from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

In this week’s double reading, Behar-Bechukosai, the Torah teaches us about the holiness of the land, the sanctity of time, and the covenant between Hashem and His people. The Shemittah (Sabbatical) and Yovel (Jubilee) laws remind us that even ownership and labor must yield to G-d’s command. In Bechukosai, Hashem promises blessing for obedience and warns of the consequences of turning away. It’s a message both sobering and empowering: our choices matter deeply.

The great Rebbe Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev once walked into a marketplace and saw a Jew selling his wares while praying from a siddur. He paused and said, “Master of the World, look at Your children! Even when they work, they cling to You!” He then turned to the man and said, “You fulfill the verse, ‘If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments’, not only in the synagogue but in the middle of your workday.”

This story teaches a powerful truth embedded in our parsha: walking in Hashem’s statutes is not limited to moments of ritual but includes every step of life — how we work, relate, and rest. The Shemittah teaches us to trust in Hashem even when logic tells us otherwise. The blessings and curses of Bechukosai highlight that our lives are interwoven with spiritual consequence.

This message of faith and resilience resonates deeply with us at Chabad Palisades. We are incredibly grateful to Hashem for helping us find a new temporary home for PJECC while we rebuild our Palisades campus. In that spirit, we invite you to join us for a special Open House & Community BBQ this Wednesday, May 28th at 5:00 PM.

The event will also feature the Palisades Children’s Business Fair, where local kid entrepreneurs will proudly present their handmade goods and creative ideas. Come show your support for our loving and resilient community!

May we all merit a life filled with blessing, peace, and the presence of Hashem in all our ways.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zushe Cunin

New Course
Living on a Prayer
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy for our lives to become spiritual deserts, lacking meaningful connection and intentional thought. As we rush through our daily routines, ticking tasks off our to-do lists, we can feel overwhelmed by anxiety and lose sight of our deeper thirst for meaning and connection. This course will explore how prayer acts as a grounding force in our lives, enabling us to channel our desire for connection and spiritual satisfaction into tangible action while deepening our relationship with G-d.

Parshah
Parshah in a Nutshell

Parshat Behar-Bechukotai

The name of the Parshah, “Behar,” means “on Mount [Sinai]” and it is found in Leviticus 25:1. The name of the Parshah, “Bechukotai,” means “in My statutes” and it is found in Leviticus 26:3.

On the mountain of Sinai, G‑d communicates to Moses the laws of the Sabbatical year: every seventh year, all work on the land should cease, and its produce becomes free for the taking for all, man and beast.

Seven Sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year—the Jubilee year, on which work on the land ceases, all indentured servants are set free, and all ancestral estates in the Holy Land that have been sold revert to their original owners. Additional laws governing the sale of lands, and the prohibitions against fraud and usury, are also given.

G‑d promises that if the people of Israel will keep His commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell securely in their homeland. But He also delivers a harsh “rebuke,” warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with Him. Nevertheless, “Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away; nor will I ever abhor them, to destroy them and to break My covenant with them; for I am the L‑rd their G‑d.”

The Parshah concludes with the rules on how to calculate the values of different types of pledges made to G‑d, and the mitzvah of tithing produce and livestock.

When a person walks along without a thought of Torah in his head, the very ground under his feet cries out: "Clod! What makes you any better than me? By what rights do you step on me?"
